IMHO as davidoft1 said it still could be hall sender - or leads - or coil..  increased load at higher rpms when hot causing failure?

Checked impedance of leads?

exactly this..  Don't worry about "why" just get the belt off and reset the engine to TDC by hand

late or early? Petrol or Diesel? Which model of westy?

go petrol and find/fit a 2.0 8v GTi engine..  same block as the diesels

very many years ago I managed to fit front ball joints with the dust covers still on them...

whats the plans with the 1.7?  upgrade/refurbish?

oooh yes.  I remembered this thread and the comments by @ZsZ about the "chirping"  -an excellent adjective I remember "fine tuning" JX lumps by moving the pump when the engine was running (usually after a timing belt and h20 pump change) and if it got a bit "chirpy" the...

I did have plans to upgrade my early fusebox but you have changed my mind!!!

If you mean these that I have circled then OBG is correct, they are the leading/trailing edge of the waterpump vanes
