Re: Sooty plugs all of a sudden….? Summer holiday departure imminent..
I don't see the AFM mentioned, which, from my experience, could be the cause. Have you tried cleaning the track?

A South African van perhaps? I also have a DL, it was the gearbox VWSA fitted to the last of the air-cooled vans.

Re: Header Tank level
I Or simply your black tank cap was duff and now it's been replaced with one that works properly then the cooling system now work properly. You nailed it right there. A malfunctioning cap that always left air trapped in the expansion tank right from the start and myself accepting that as the...

Re: Header Tank level
I tested one of my blue caps last night using an airbrush regulator, and lo and behold, contrary to my expectation, the valve opened at around 1 Bar. This changes everything: all this time I've been barking up the wrong tree by thinking it was a safety release valve that would only open at well abov...

Re: Header Tank level
OK, I wasn't aware of the different types of blue caps. Mine all have a one-way valve and a safety release valve. One with a pressure regulator should cause the coolant level in the replenish tank to rise and fall with engine temperature in the same way as in my expansion tank with trapped air then....

Or simply your black tank cap was duff and now it's been replaced with one that works properly then the cooling system now work properly. The black tank cap that worked correctly was the original that came with the engine when new. Due to age, I replaced my expansion tank after about 15 year...

Re: Header Tank level
A quick update on the one-way valve that I fitted between the expansion and replenish tanks: trapped air still manages to escape resulting in coolant flowing in the opposite direction and filling the expansion tank; it just takes longer. It was a stupid idea anyway, as it defeated the function of th...

Re: Cooling System Query
These vehicles are peculiar with the engine at the rear and the radiator up front. Both the radiator inlet and outlet are located at the bottom of the radiator, with the cooling pipes running underneath the vehicle to the engine. Coolant levels around the engine may appear normal, but if the coolant...

Re: 1987 DJ does not fit 1983 Cooling Pipes
A word of warning before you start cutting: tilting the boot upwards raises the AFM. Verify that it doesn't interfere with the engine cover. I see that mine touches the insulation, which is not a problem, but in your case the AFM will be positioned further backwards and might foul the centre member....

Re: 1987 DJ does not fit 1983 Cooling Pipes
Another option is to try and move the airbox backwards. I effectively did this by shortening the oil breather pipe and rotating the boot between the throttle body and AFM. This raised the airbox slightly, which was accommodated by my custom-made fitting between the airbox and cyclone filter. I, of c...

Re: 1987 DJ does not fit 1983 Cooling Pipes
My '83 van was originally air-cooled and I fitted a DJ engine in '89. I found that the gearbox and engine mounting bar on mine were positioned further forward compared to the donor vehicle. The fitting between the air filter and cyclone filter also didn't allow them to meet up; I had to make a custo...

Re: Dashboard PCB Replacement (CJH Design)
This is my PIC-based stepper motor cluster made years ago that I never installed. Each motor is microstepped by a dedicated microcontroller. The artwork is engraved on the back of a non-reflective acrylic glass sheet and filled with paint. Regardless of tunnels and built-up areas, I would in no way ...
