One other thing, if you fancy heading up through Wales, Henstent Park near Pen y bont Fawr is right by a beautiful river and nice and cheap. (I'm not sure what it's like for vans though, I camped)

I camped wild at the edge of Seathwaite Tarn and Angle Tarn (13 years ago or so, names may be spelled wrong), both were awesome. Seathwaite Tarn had several flat areas of grass right on the edge of the water, not too rocky in the soil either.
