Re: Smoking 1.6 TD
Crikey, that's terrible. Thanks for the advice. The van's going nowhere - except back to the garage again, I guess.

Re: Smoking 1.6 TD
Thanks for the advice. We're off to Pembrokeshire so it's a 300+ mile trip each way - so plenty of time for something to go wrong. And it would ruin the holiday anyway if I was worried about the van failing the whole time. Its just so frustrating. We've spent a large chunk of our life's savings on t...

Smoking 1.6 TD
In 2010 I had a new engine (a Vege rebuild of my old 1.6 TD) fitted by my local VW garage. It was a very thorough job, the total bill was £3,500. I hoped it would give our van a completely new lease of life. How wrong I was! Almost first time out following the rebuild the gearbox died. We were very ...

Re: Oil pressure pipe for 1600 TD
Many thanks, really appreciate your information and advice. I'll certainly check whether the bracket was fitted - it would be truly awful if this problem had been caused by the garage being negligent. I had to drive nearly a mile before it was safe to stop, but very slowly. The light wasn't on all t...

Oil pressure pipe for 1600 TD
Last year we rebuilt our gearbox and engine (at considerable expense) and, at the advice of the garage, replaced a lot of other associated parts, including clutch and turbo. After some nagging teething problems we finally seemed to have got all our problems sorted and have enjoyed three or four mont...

No evidence of overheating, providing the gauge is trustworthy on mine. It's pretty much in the middle once warm and hardly moves. I'll post back if the garage manage to find anything.

Re: Intermittent power loss on 1.6TD - garage "baffled"
Thanks, really appreciate your suggestion.
I'm going back to the garage tomorrow. If anyone has any other suggestions or ideas, please let me know - I'd really like to cure this frustrating problem and finally begin to enjoy the van at last.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll certainly check out the solonoid.
The smell is mainly when the engine is running, it's much fainter when turned off. There are no oil drips under the engine and no obvious sign of leaks - it all looks pretty clean.

Re: Intermittent power loss on 1.6TD - garage "baffled"
A small postscript...
My wife followed me home today. She said the van smelled very oily indeed - she had to shut the car window - and was very smokey - blueish grey. But it isn't using any oil. Could an over-rich mix be the problem?

Intermittent power loss on 1.6TD - garage "baffled"
Last year, at vast expense, we had our engine (Vege) and gearbox reconditioned, a new clutch and turbo, and replaced everything else that our local VW specialist garage recommended we do at the same time. But we still have trouble… The van starts well and runs smoothly and powerfully for a while – s...

Re: My rebuilt gearbox is talking to me: should I be concerned?
Thanks Aiden, I feared you might say that - it doesn't seem right to me either and I'll do as you suggest. Who knows, perhaps one day someone will carry out a repair for us properly and the van will actually work as intended. It doesn't seem to matter what I do, or how much I spend, there always see...

Re: My rebuilt gearbox is talking to me: should I be concerned?
Thanks for the advice and good suggestions. I'll ask Vege what they think and I'll also get a second opinion on the noise from a local gearbox expert. I'll let you know the result.
I'm in Suffolk btw.
Best wishes

Re: My rebuilt gearbox is talking to me: should I be concerned?
"clatter" when warm and stationary? what happens when you press the clutch? go quiet? did a new clutch and release bearing get fitted? did the release arms get checked for "flatting" (the tips need to be a nice rounded shape where the release bearing sits) I'd call it chatter ra...

My rebuilt gearbox is talking to me: should I be concerned?
We recently got our five speed gearbox rebuilt on our 1.6 TD T25 van, following a major failure. An initial inspection revealed that the box was in very poor condition and had, and some point in its past, been run without any oil in it! The rebuild was carried out by Vege and it’s now back in the va...
