Re: What exhaust?
Hi Fairwynds, I have just had a JP stainless steel exhaust system fitted to my 1985 DG (early style exhaust) and can thoroughly recommend it. The quality is excellent and it's much quieter than the standard VW system. Also the performance, fuel economy, and "smoothness" have improved signi...

Re: Silencer in need of support?
Hmm, this is growing arms and legs! Still, it'll be worth the hassle to have the nice new exhaust well supported so it won't shear.
As you said, do it right, do it once - my Aiden Talbot gearbox rebuild three years ago has been worth every penny.
Cheers
Oliver

Silencer in need of support?
Evening folks, I have just had a Stainless Steel exhaust fitted to replace my early style exhaust which had started to sound a bit "sporty" was prone to back-firing which was a laugh! Anyway, the new exhaust has silencer straps, but no hanger/cradle for the silencer, which I was advised by...

Re: Driveshaft grief
Hi CovKid, I too have the some rythmic noise you descibe from my van. It's from the drivers side and is best described as a loud clunking noise related to road speed. The noise is so loud it turns pedestrians heads......... It's done it intermittantly since we got the van three years ago, and has be...

Re: Alternator diagnostics
Hi all, Cheers for all the responses, it's much appreciated. The burning smell was from the alternator itself, with the belt being OK. I've disconnected the battery to eliminate any spontaneous combustion issues. Thanks for the kind offer of the used alternators Ghost123. I was seriously tempted, bu...

Alternator diagnostics
Hi all, I'm looking for some advise regarding checks I can perform on the alternator/regulator. The charging light came on last night, and there was a slight hot electrical smell..... Luckily we were a mile away from the house so we got home on the remaining battery charge. The voltage across the ba...

Gutter trim adhesive
The black plastic guttering trim on the drivers "A" post (between the windowscreen and drivers door) was loose so I took it off before it fell off itself. I have tried glueing it back on with evostick contact adhesive which was no good. Can anybody recommend something better? It seems that...
Many thanks for the info guys. I am always impressed by the quality replies on this forum. After sleeping on it my sensible head says that one T25 is enough. I can't risk buying a money pit because I have already spent a lot of money this summer getting my broken gearbox rebuilt by Aiden (top job bt...
Bargain?
Hi folks, A local garage has a "H" reg LHD Caravelle Synchro awaiting preparation for sale. For what I can deduce it's a 2.1 injection CL, with eberspacher heating and 14 inch wheels. I don't know the mileage. It's a bit scabby around the edges in all the usual places. Basically it is in a...

Hi Neil, I am feeling your pain...... My 1985 four speed also lost two gears, third and fourth in June. Luckily it happened within half a mile of home. Synchronutz in Shotts collected the van and sent the gearbox down to Aidan, who has done an excellent job with all new bearings, synchromesh rings, ...

Evening! Thanks for the replies Harry and Keith. I have had the van to work and back, which is 50 miles, and I haven't quite described the symptoms properly - any gear is difficult to select or disengage from when the 'box is hot. I get the impression it is either the linkage and/or clutch but I am ...

Thanks for all the advice so far - the knowledge that is available in this forum is amazing! The garage hasn't had the linkage apart, they have applied lithium grease to the bushes. There aren't any leaks in the hydraulic system - I've looked, hoping that there is a number of times! It does sound li...

Gearbox problem?
Good afternoon! When cold the gear selection is fine, however, once the gearbox is hot it intermittently sticks in third and fourth gear. Double declutching helps a bit. If you stop when stuck in fourth, and switch off the engine it is still difficult to get into neutral. If you "waggle" t...
