It's almost certainly worn heat exchangers and/or push rod tubes dripping into the heat exchangers... been there, drove me mad for months as I just couldn't afford to replace them. When I did, the smell cleared up, I put on - new heat exchangers (not cheap), new heater pods (medium cheap), new push ...

Sorry about the delay, but yes, it comes out complete.

Taking the carbs off makes things slightly easier as you don't have to have the van up quite so high.

It's just standard fuel hose as far as I remember, I just bought some from Halfrauds, cut to length and replaced.

Very simple. Look into the engine bay with the engine running, get someone to pump the throttle a couple of times to see which bit moves, it's on the side of the carb/carbs. (RH one if I remember correctly.) Switch off engine, undo the nut that pinches the cable, pull it taunt and re-tighten the pin...
