Mine was failed on MOT for the short bent tailpipe having holes. Apparently the exhaust system should have no gas escape from engine until the end of the tailpipe. But for other use the only downside would be exhaust fumes into the interior - this is dangerous - carbon monoxide poisoning, go to slee...
Hi If same as mine, '81 Caravelle, the horn unit has 12v supply from fuse and the brown is the earth (neg) connection when horn pressed. ie, goes from the horn up inside steering column via brown with spade terminal and press-to-sound just connects brown to earth via horn ring. Thus all that wiring ...
CJ I would be sceptical of stainless for head studs. Stainless is prone to fatigue if vibrated ... and it would seem that with those studs being vibrated every time a piston fires would be a good source of vibration ... no? I know its not recommended for the engine mounting bolts in inboard engined ...
Yep, quite right Pete to replace those joints. You were lucky to catch it in time and not get stuck on the road!! I'm sure that amount of pitting would lead to bolt problems in the near future, even with cleaning and new grease. It doesn't take much wear or pitting as the case hardening in the track...
Thanks for this post and particularly for the debrief on the condition of your old CV joint being pitted. At the risk of offending those of you here with more experience and knowledge of these vans than I, I have a theory that the reason these bolts loosen and shear - after 25 to 30 years - is becau...
Does this always happen now? And did it happen before the garage work? These points refer to the 1.9 DG engine with the Pierburg carburettor. Have had similar but only rare occasions. On mine I take the electrical lead off the idle cutoff, item 8 in CJH's sketch, spray with wd40-ish stuff and that o...
I tapped mine for a 14mm thread insert with the supplied tap kit, slightly ground to make it a 'starter' tap - ie more tapered at the start. It was a bit awkward but doable! The sump where the plugs is is not very thick! For all sump plugs I also always use PTFE tape (plumbers tape or the thicker ga...
Hi Had a similar problem last year, not really sorted yet but I have found some quirky aspects to this! All through this the temp needle showed normal. I went through all the recommended fixes - cleaned probes in expansion tank, checked connections, had dash off and did earths crowns etc etc ... Non...
Hi I replaced the fuel and return supply hoses with hard nylon 6mm. It wont bend around small radius bends but its fine for tank/filter to engine compartment. I think mine was about £3 for 3 m. Its cheap as chips, not liable to wear or degrade, in our lifetime, its used for all types of industrial a...
HI Yes fitted dry - or with a little grease is OK. NOT silicone gasket sealant - this can turn to crumbs on contact with petrol. The main breather crossover pipe should be held by a centre clip before fitting tank - guess you already got that far! After you get the tank up into position it is possib...
This may be a silly comment but why not replace the metal pipes with rubber hose from industrial hose supplier? And get SS hose clips from same source. In a previous life we also used to grease hose clips before fitting, easier to remove or tighten in x years time! For joiners use a short piece of o...
