Re: multimeter usage on battery drain
Safest way is to disconnect the battery completely, put the meter on a low resistance setting and connect it to the two leads of the van. Note the reading on the meter, remove fuses/disconnect stuff as applicable until the reading drops significantly. Bear in mind that a reading of zero will almost ...

Re: 2 litre Aircooled thermostat
I wondered about this when I had my Baywindow 1800 - essentially the same engine as the 2.0l CU. When I first had it there was no thermostat fitted, but the flaps were still there and fixed in the 'hot' position. Having examined the way it works I decided that a standard setup was worth a go, so I f...

Re: Spdt Relay advice
How many terminals does your relay have? If five as I suspect you'll need to have the trigger on 85 and 86, the supply on 30, and the alarm LED on 87a.

No idea about your clutch - but I also had a DT175. Mine was a very non standard paintbrush finished silver.

Re: Gearbox oil level check
The van, if standard height, is far enough off the floor to be able to check the gearbox oil by wiggling yourself underneath on your back. I usually get under there by lying on the floor between the wheels on the driver's side head to the rear, and wriggle in that way, at the rear the engine is a bi...

Re: mis-reading speedo
A similar thing happened to mine, and in my van the pin on which the needle and cup turn had worn down, meaning the part of the assembly that is turned by the cable could just graze along the cup and physically turn it, rather than the field it produces pushing it against return spring pressure. I c...

Re: Does anyone know what this wire is
Assuming it serves the same function as on my 2.0l aircool, it's the connector for the timing apparatus used by VW garages when these vans were current. It shouldn't be connected to anything except when such a timing check is being done. If so then it leads to a pickup on the front of the crankcase,...

Is it an 'intelligent' charger - Optimate or similar? Often there is no output when under no load.

Re: leaky carb
When you look down the carb venturi with the engine running, is fuel leaking out of the float bowl vent, (the bit I mentioned earlier)? If no, then the needle valve isn't letting by. The float bowl is NOT pressurised, the vent discussed opens the float bowl to the air intake - if the needle valve is...

Re: leaky carb
That's the float chamber, there should be no pressure there other than atmospheric*, and certainly not fuel under pressure from the fuel pump - the needle valve is the only area that is subject to pump pressure. I suspect the gasket has failed around the stub that supplies the accelerator pump diaph...
