It's just Buna-N (nitrile). Not especially hot inside an engine, actually rather cool as hot things go. That is, if you deal with hot things. But them that don't think everything's too hot.

Re: Heater Matrix Pipework Query
...has anyone ever just tapped off the radiator Pipework to avoid the need to run the additional pipes from the rear of the car to the front (?)... I had the same thought years ago and used one of the special radiator feed hoses with molded-in tee for the autotrans oil Hx. Of course the heater must...

Re: Faulty breather tower - will adding a PCV valve inline fix it?
The conception was faulty so the diaphragm doesn't do anything of note to regulate case underpressure. The tower itself is a good thing, column height is essential to oil mist separation, which is always a problem with horizontal engines, but you'll gain nothing by buying a new one. What you have th...

Bump indeed. Here's a couple along these lines, two chapters of one story:

There's other blog entries with more features of the remodel, too.

Re: AFM question - DJ / MV / DH / GW engines
A little late perhaps for your needs but may help future readers.
The book tests would point up a complete failure, as in open circuits, but don't actually confirm an AFM is functional. This does:

Re: Another rebuild already??
The article explains what a fire ring is (asterisked at bottom in case you missed that).
And here's another one addressing the function, or I should say lack of it, of the cyl. top o-ring.

I have an article that explains what's going on and how you can tell a fire ring leak, which it sounds like you have, from a pressure cap problem. https://intrepidoverland.com/bad-coolant-pressure-cap-or-bad-head-gasket/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Chemical tests are not...

Re: Water cooler at oil filter
VW realised that there was a problem and put the generic oil cooler/warmer on the syncro's and 2.1's. I'm afraid not, it's to get the engine to full operating temp so the FI will go into closed loop quickly in order to lower the overall emissions profile, mainly for what at the time were more strin...

Re: Overflow Tank Full but Header Tank Empty
When coolant keeps transferring to the reserve tank, two easy checks will distinguish a pressure cap not holding from a fire ring (MLS compression seal) failing: 1. If, after running at full operating temp and before cooling down, the reserve tank level has been seen to rise substantially, but the p...

There's only one opinion that matters on this question and only one set of advisements you should, nay, you MUST follow: THE REBUILDER'S! I have only ever had to refuse one warranty claim and that was when the installing mechanic ignored my specific instructions and did instead what he preferred to ...

Re: Cardboard shroud / baffle under radiator
Basically the baffles force air through the radiator, because air is lazy and will take the path of least resistance, without baffles a lot of cooling air will not be forced to pass through the radiator effectively making it a clogged radiator or a less efficient smaller one The panels can't increa...

Re: Extra gauges - wiring help required.
(copied over form an ancient post I did on Samba:) This applies to '86+ fuse panels: When you want a power supply for something, there are unused pins on the back of the main relay panel for most anything you'd need. On the left end (installed position), there are 6 pins in two rows labelled "...

Re: WBXlog
I don't see where you checked the oil pump gear endplay. If the actual gear endplay is anything over .004", you will have excessive fluid "slip" when hot and this is the #1 reason for low oil pressure and nuisance OP warnings. Your cover gasket is .0067", so if your pump's gear e...

Re: Coolant Pressure playing silly buggers!
A viscous liquid at less than 15psi won't flow thru a leak space when the condition is such that only hot gases at over 40 times the pressure can force their way thru. Keep using the engine, though, and that equation will change. Part of the gas-escape equation is also the extreme pressure acting to...
