Thermostat seal - top or bottom?
Hello folks - just in the process of replacing the thermostat on my 1987 2.1 petrol. The old thermostat has a misshapen seal ring on the underside (fitting in the thermostat housing) and a seal ring on top too. When I have gone to fit the new thermostat, it seems to sit too high when I have the new ...

Fuel tank connecting breather pipe - Arrrggghhhh!!!
Hiya folks - I have just re-fitted my fuel tank and having a bit of a game with the connecting breather pipe on top of the tank. I see the Wiki notes that this could do with being longer for refitting (I am currently about 1mm short of pushing it on to the fitting on the driver's side of the tank th...

Hi Martin - good to hear from you! It was around 12 months ago we were all in Berlin - Happy times! Thanks for the advice. I think I'll order a new fan switch then for peace of mind.
Cheers Mark

New engine - seems to run hot...
Hello folks, I have just had a TES 2.1 DJ recon engine fitted to my bus last week. During this running in phase, the temp gauge is well over to the right, pretty much on the cusp of the fan kicking in all the time (not just in town traffic, but gently coasting down A roads). I know it's been quite h...

Re: Both head gaskets gone within six months - LPG?
Hi and thanks. Yes, I should have said - on the left side, the water jackets have gone twice, but just before Christmas the sealing rings went on the right side. Sorry to show my ignorance, but what does lean running mean? If anything I do less miles now than before I had the van converted as I now ...

Both head gaskets gone within six months - LPG?
Hello folks, Sadly, having only just had the right sided head gasket replaced 3 months ago (my engine is a 1987 WBX 2.1), the left sided one went on our way home from Devon on Sunday. As three head gaskets have 'gone' within three and a half years, it's finally time to get a reconditioned engine (ba...

Re: Engine running hot, hot, hot!
Yeah, just been on Brickwerks and found it - Doh! Ah well, because I have an irrational fear of all things electric, at least paying the auto electrician has diagnosed where the problem lies. Now all I need to do is fit the right sender.....

Re: Engine running hot, hot, hot!
That's interesting - I think he said it is a plastic housing for the sender. Its' an auto electrician I use and he said VW sent the wrong sender twice, so I think he had to do something to it to make it fit. I'm not sure what that was exactly, but perhaps 'modifying' the wrong sender could be the ro...

Re: Engine running hot, hot, hot!
Hi - Yeah, the temp sender was replaced. It took about 5 mins for the guage to start to climb and I put the fan on probably just before it reached 3/4 as I was stuck in traffic. I know the thermo switch works as I replaced that myself. Cheers, Mark
