the acrid smell when running will be coolant, sounds like a gasket failure, or coolant leaking around head studs
or lower barrel seal leaking.
check heads very closely for pin holes or pitting around barrel seals.

bays have servo brakes too.
i have never seen/ heard of a non servo brake set up on a t25.

just shows how ruff a tidy looking motor can be,
i've seen it b4 when pullin apart old cars and van for restro. all the bodges that other people have done
filler sealent and paint cover up all sorts of grott. you never really know.

mine was riveted around where they cut the hole along the top were the wooden frames are that trim the roof, was also riveted along the front of roof, and along the rear edge, the roof was sealed some dodgy stuff inthe gutters. it was really butchered around the top rails, folded metal with rivets. ...

there some minor differences the bay cj has a removable oil breather, the heads are different on a cj but i cant remeber which one is which, one has lower exhaust ports think it the t25 cu i have put a t25 two litre in a bay but never the other way i'm sure it is possible but i think the bay engine ...

sound like air in the clutch fluid and needs the fluid changing and bleeding.

checksee if the coil itself is giving a spark?(remove the main lead from coil to dizzy hold near an earth an see if theres a spark)
check the rotor arm and dizzy cap for damage.
