Thanks for the replies, it seems the Bently manual is the way to go. Its not the EGR as it turns out, I spent ages tring to identify it from the vague Haynes pictures only to discover it had been removed and plugged! Ah well back to the drawing board!

Hi Fritz, Thanks for the info, the Vanagon Haynes manual isn't very helpful! I think it may be something to do with the EGR which has similar symptoms.
