once "the wife" came home and was able to move the gear stick while i overlooked what was occuring underneath it transpired that the "piston" at the bottom of the gear selector was not moving freely so removed the assembly, cleaned, lubed and reassembled. Now all is good in the w...

Thanks for your thoughts, the cover has been removed and the bellows cover looks pretty ropey but intact and the mechanism needed a lube but it still doesnt want to travel over once the cover is fitted, i guess the problem must be along the linkage to the gear box.....
