Re: Winterising
Hi Peteandnero, I spose my mind set is DG wasserboxer - others far more expert will be able to shed some light on the particulars (or idiosycrasies) of your AFN. Out of interest, how long have you had your van? Being a careful-ish bloke I would check, or have checked, all the things they look at fo...

Re: Winterising
If you're not driving it regularly, at least disconnect the battery(ies). Ideally bring batts indoors and put on charge with an automatic / intelligent charger from time to time. Do a full cooling system flush and replace the coolant - important for corrosion protection. See the Wiki for details. B...

Eberspacher D2 retrofit
Hi, due to domestic meltdown I may be spending more time in my van this winter! This leads to my query. I have been trying to get information before posting up on fear of repeating questions and getting my knuckles rapped. I have the original Eberspacher diesel heater in my westfalia 1989 joker and ...

Re: Led headlights
Hella units are NOT designed for LED bulbs and WILL cause stray light. I spent many many hours on this which is partly why I ditched Hellas altogether. They leak light all over the place. Less of a prob with tungsten or halogen, but with LEDs its terrible. As said, they don't comply on our vehicles...

Oil grade for AFN Tdi
Hi, I wondered what the opinions of more expert members would be on the best oil grade for Tdi conversion with around 130bhp. This was a fully rebuilt engine about 8000 mile ago. The recommendations for the fan seem to be 10w40 semi synthetic but due to considerations for the turbo and the slightly ...

Front spoiler and spare wheel access
Hi 80-90s, I just fitted one of the 3 piece replica front spoilers based on the Westfalia Joker 5 piece one. It was a good fit with all the holes for the rivnuts in the right places. I fitted the centre section which was pre-drilled and drilled throughout the side pieces where they overlap the centr...

Re: Fiamma bike racks and fat tyres...
Hi, I built a rack from various old ones and use the Fiamma rails as the base part. The 'gutter's will take any tyre, with larger ones sitting on top and not into the channel but the knobbles stop them slipping no problem as long as the strap is done up. The only issues I've had were with racing dee...

Hi there,

brake and clutch build up
Hi, I'm trying but struggling to work out what the problem is here. I know the brakes and clutch run off the same reservoir but the problem may be entirely unrelated. I drove to relatives over Christmas a 500ml roundtrip. On setting off I noticed the brake biting point seemed a bit higher and then f...

Re: Power steering pipe replacement '87 td
I used the Brickwerks replacements and the job went well with no problems after a couple of years now. The only problem I had was removing the last run of the original pipework where it passes the rear wheel/suspension. I ended up just leaving it there.

Re: Westfalia underslung tank - valve replacement
I went to Peter Gunzl for a replacement when I stripped and reconditioned my tank. Simple job but leak testt all your threads with detergent solution and use gas thread price tape. To empty the tank I attached a length of tube extending well out the garage into the garden and left it gently venting ...

Re: What colour (white) is my camper
Hi from my internet research I think I'm right in saying the L90D paint colour changed dranamaticly around 1979/80 ish. It went from a buttery creamy white to a much more green tinged white more similar to vw alpine white. Halfords sell vw "pastel white" in rattle cans and it is the older ...

Re: Fitting Quarter light window seals
John, that's great advice thanks. Just to trouble you further, but the reason I hadn't taken the main glass out originally was because I'd followed the Haynes manual for taking it out and basically couldn't get it to budge. If you have nay insight into removing the main window that would be great. I...

Fitting Quarter light window seals
Hi, I'd really appreciate some advice please. I've been respraying the van and have take the doors off for a proper job. For the front doors I managed to get the door handles off and the window seals out. The quarter light window seals which are opening ones were tricky but I managed to pull them ou...

Paint for pop-top
Hi, I'm thinking of going down the Rustoleum roller path to paint my Westfalia but wondered about the pop-top. It's a but scruffy and could do with a coat, so what paint should I use on it as it seems to be a rough finish rather than the smooth gelcoat type gloss. Any suggestions would be great. atb...
