Re: 1.6TD JX - Half starts from cold, other half wakes up later
Hi there, My JX is a three cylinder starter with the forth coming to life after 30 seconds or so when cold. I put new glow plugs in a year ago and checked all the electrics which improved cold starting hugely but not the lost cylinder problem. My theory is this is to do with ignition in the cylinder...

Re: 1989 1.6 turbo diesel coolant leak
Hi there, If it is coming from the sensor then it maybe as simple as a perished rubber o-ring that seals the sensor to the engine. I replaced the sensor and it came with the rubber o-ring so I assume it has one. It is not too difficult to remove the sensor (the VW clips can be fiddly and access a we...

Re: Coolant Top Up Tank - what type of hose clamp?
Thanks guys,
Job done with Mr Hacksaw. Even after cutting the crimped bit off it still needed more (access was difficult to cut at the correct angle). The hose is quite thick so just sawed straight through it in the end.
Thanks all.

Re: Coolant Top Up Tank - what type of hose clamp?
A-ha! Hacksaw it is then.....thought that's what it looked like, just hoped they had put something easier to get off on there. The crimped bit is at the bottom which makes access a bit harder.... at least the end at the Darlek cap has no hose clamp. Will be replacing with something a bit more user f...

Coolant Top Up Tank - what type of hose clamp?
Hi all, Just replacing the tube between the darlek cap on the coolant expansion tank and the top up tank. I am having trouble getting the hose clamp off the old tube where it connects to the top up tank. What type of clamp do they use?? Access is a bit fiddly and the bottom of the clamp looks crimpe...

Re: Thermostat removal in JX - How to remove alternator

Re: Anti Freeze Comma G40?
Hello! VW here in Norway sold me some G40 made by BASF and say it is the same stuff. Not sure about the comma, if you have a read on the box for the 'ingredients' and take a look at the wiki (https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Coolant_and_Heating_recommended_brands" onclick="window.open(this.href...

Re: Non starting JX when hot.
Hello, I have this problem too - I can start if I use the 'cold start' lever (or shall we call it the 'hot start' lever :D ). I have had the pump timed and this made little difference. I am wondering if it is because of old injectors giving a bad spray and making ignition harder. I am guessing my in...

Re: Thermostat removal in JX - PAS pump bracket in way
Hi all, A quick update... It is the the power steering pump bracket that is in the way of one of the thermostat housing bolts. There is a small gap between the bracket and the housing but my spanner is too thick to get through (and I doubt there is enough space to withdraw the bolt anyhow). So, afte...

Re: Thermostat removal in JX - How to remove alternator
Thanks guys, I'll try to take a photo after work tomorrow. I think this is a power steering issue... I think the power steering pump bracket is covering one of the screws for the thermostat housing. I've had the van up on a lift at our work motor club and am pretty sure one nut is covered. I will sp...

Re: Thermostat removal in JX - cannot remove housing
Hello All, An update: After studying the manuals and having a poke around the engine bay I think it is the power steering pump bracket that is preventing access to the thermostat housing. So, the current problem is getting the alternator out so I can get to this. I have slackened the alternator adju...

Thermostat removal in JX - How to remove alternator
Hi All, I have been doing some work on my diesel JX's cooling system to stop leaks etc.and to change a stuck thermostat. I have removed the hose to the plastic thermostat housing but cannot removing the housing as one of the two nuts is impossible to get at. Can some one confirm that I need to remov...

Re: 205x70x14c tyres
Hello all, I have the Nexen tyres on my van as summer tyres. I think they have quite a high load rating also which is good to know. So far I have been happy with them. That said, the old summer tyres were so terrible (old and worn) that anything would have been an improvement... It interesting to co...

Re: Komet NSR side Bumper
Hi, I think you can get the original VW big bumpers from VW Classic Parts (http://www.volkswagen-classic-parts.de/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). However, I think they are expensive - i was enquiring when I last had work on the van and they telephoned for me and got the p...

Re: engine undercover or not?
Hello there, My JX has not had the covers on since I bought it two and a half years ago and it seems ok with it. I think over here the snow and cold weather eats away at it pretty quickly! I guess the engine will get rusty quicker and maybe a bit more noisy inside (no sound insulation), but cannot t...
