Re: Help with removal of nearside brake hub

Front hub (taper) bearings should be set to approx 3 thou' endfloat or 0.07mm. Never "nip" them or set them tight, thats when they overheat, the stub axle gets red hot and fails...

Its all in the Haynes Book of Lies, they got that bit right.

Re: Rear bearings, housing and stub axel issue - question

PS imho VW should have used locking compound on the splines but it would make assembly a messy job, although my 1972 Rover P6 specced loctite AVV (superceded by 270) for the IRS rear hub stub axles and they had to have the taper roller bearing preload set up before final assembly.

Re: Rear bearings, housing and stub axel issue - question

FWIW the very large torque required on rear stub axle nuts (revised upwards from the earliest models) is afaik to prevent the coarse splines "fretting" and wearing as the drive torque is applied. Its got nothing to do with the bearing clearances once installed. Fitting the inner ball race ...

Re: Petrol Alternative Engines...

2.1 WBX can be converted to 2475cc with 98mm pistons, 82mm stroker crank and minor case mods. With a "fast road" cam optimised for mid-range torque you can expect a conservative 140bhp and 200Nm torque and it will run happily on either of the stock injection systems. New or reconditioned i...

Re: What have I lost?

Dust caps often don't clear the centre bore of aftermarket alloys...but if you have one on the nearside (which drives the speedo) then it should fit ok.

Re: Cylinder head advice wanted

Wbx head studs won't come out that easily! L

Usually a full strip down job, split the case, heat up with a big propane torch and then clamp the case down and extract with a ½" drive self-tightening chuck.

IF it goes well. Which it often doesn't.

Check the distributor vacuum unit (suck on the little pipe, it should hold vacuum)
They often fail at this age and get forgotten, causes an air leak which messes up the mixture.

Re: Oettinger T3 datasheets or owners club? need info on brakes!

The Oettinger brakes are a mash-up of Mercedes discs with BMW/ATE calipers. I have the syncro set (different front discs I think) but the rears are incomplete, no adaptors. I'd like to reinstate them but will use my Sharan disc conversion for now. I had been told that the rear discs were actually re...

Re: Golf Mk4

Its still just a 115HP, 170Nm @2400rpm four pot. Barely adequate for a heavy van other than a slightly better torque spread compared to a DJ and pulls from 1500rpm. I'd go for a 150hp 20vt swap if I was shopping for a low maintenance conversion, which won't kick the shizzle out of the transaxle in f...
