Could still be a gasket failure though too, a sniff test will tell.

Hope you get it sorted in time !

Well he's done the sniff test and says it is the gasket. So he's working on it and we should get it back next week. Pretty expensive job though! oh well.

Re: overheating engine

Hi Everyone. Just thought I'd post an update on our van. It's still not sorted but hopefully getting there as we go on holiday to France soon! Our previous garage annoyed me by constantly saying that it wasn't a real problem and it was just the lights, and they pretty much refused to do the sniff te...

Re: overheating engine

I have not checked with the wiki, but just to sure things are clear here. The topping up at ~2,000 rpm is into the tank on the left, the one with the Dalek cap on it, not the tank behind the flap. The one behind the flap can be called the expansion tank (hence my typing this) or the "top up ta...

Re: overheating engine

My understanding is that the header tank is the pressurised tank, with the dalek cap, it should be completely full. The tank behind the numberplate is the expansion tank, should be filled to between the Max and min lines. Yes thanks, that's what I thought. I was just confused by the fact there was ...

Re: overheating engine

OK, so we now have a new cap on the tank. Having looked at the coolant, it's right up to the top in the header tank. Is this right? I don't know if I'm being stupid, but I can't see a maximum line. So from looking at the wiki, it looks as if I have to start the van, and raise the revs to about 2K an...

Re: overheating engine

It's not a bad idea to test your new Dalek cap before you fit it. Just blow hard though the pipe outlet and you should hear a quacking noise, like a Duck :) If you can blow straight through with no noise, then it's a duff cap [I happened to me on a brand new one recently ] Thanks, we've done ...

Re: overheating engine

Might be worth giving Olly a call at T25 Direct in Dulwich: http://www.t25direct.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Thanks so much for this tip. They sound brilliant. I just spoke to them, and aren't booking in the van yet as I'm waiting for my new header cap to arrive. H...

Re: overheating engine

Also, he mentioned something about a valve that may have caused the high level of coolant in the top up tank. Any ideas? is there something else I should order while I'm at it? That valve is part of the "Dalek" cap. Do you think there might be anyone near Brixton that may be able to come ...

Re: overheating engine

Hi Guys. Thanks for advice. We're still not sorted unfortunately. Van went back to the same garage as they agreed to spend time on it without any extra charge. They spent quite a while on it, and when I went to collect they claim that they're sure the light is an electrics issue due to the circuit b...

Re: overheating engine

Thanks for the advice. Yeah I think I need these things checked out now. Our garage has previously been pretty good. It's a VW garage and they used to look after a lot of these types of vans years ago, but not many now. I might have to take it to Volkspares again as they do more of the older vehicle...

overheating engine

Hello, Any advice appreciated. Our cooling system seems to have been playing up recently. The light had been coming on and a few months ago the garage did a proper sort out of it and filled it all up and got the air out (they said). Anyway, it hardly gets driven, and yet the next time I went to use ...

Re: problems starting engine

Thanks for the help everyone. It turned out that that there were a whole range of problems! The cold start wasn't connected so wasn't doing anything, there were a few wiring issues, a couple of dodgy glow plugs and the battery was nearing the end of its life as well. It's starting fine again now!

Re: problems starting engine

I think reasonable crank speed, I'm not sure though as I don't normally have to listen to it before it fires up. It may be a bit slow? We haven't had any work on it recently. I'm going to fully charge the battery tomorrow and just give it another go, but other than that hopefully the garage will sor...
