If it helps, Bentley states 3.0 litres (refill capacity only - 1.5 litres can't be drained) for a four speed and 4.0 litres for a 5 speed

Re: Manual gearbox oil
Hi Madoc I did this recently with a rebuilt gearbox and they definitely take 4.5l when empty (4 speed). I think that unless you remove the gearbox you can't empty all of the oil from the drain plug in situ which is why yours wouldn't take the full amount. I think I also read here that there is a one...

Re: fan test/new fan?
ok - getting there I found a good discussion about fuses at http://forum.club8090.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=94553 it look like Haynes is confused about the fuse at position no.7 in the early fusebox I also found out that the relay only works for the high speed side of the fan - so that's a good...

Re: fan test/new fan?
Still no fan... When I tested the centre pin on the fan loom there is no voltage present - I'm thinking that the loom has a supply problem. When I supply power direct from the battery to the pins either side - one side nothing at all happens, the other side a relay under they dashboard clicks (but n...

Re: fan test/new fan?
ok - thanks Pirate-Pete - didn't check the thermo switch - I'll do that tomorrow. If the switch has given up the ghost is it easy to get off?

fan test/new fan?
Just started the engine after a five month lay up. All seemed to be going well when I noticed that the temperature gauge was scarily over to the right and the engine was hotter than the sun. Tested the radiator fan as Haynes and wikis - nothing at either terminal, ignition on and off - fan dead as t...

difflock actuator orientation
I'm fitting some diff locks to a syncro for the first time. I've seen images with the actuators both ways up online. Could someone set me straight please, vacuum nozzles pointing up or down for front and rear? Many thanks

Re: rear driveshaft cv wear?
I found an online diagram http://www.jimellisvwparts.com/showAssembly.aspx?ukey_assembly=743999&ukey_make=1066&ukey_model=15582&ukey_category=21731 the dampness is where the driveshaft goes through the trailing arm roughly wher '30' meets '11' thanks for all the comments though - I'll fo...

Re: rear driveshaft cv wear?
thanks for reply Harry Mann and faggie the damp area is at the junction with the o/s wheel, not at the gearbox. I wasn't having any problems with the CV - is it possible the dampness is brake fluid seeping through from the other side? Although the CVs are originals I don't want to renew unless I hav...

rear driveshaft cv wear?
Hi - looking at the wheel connection of the rear o/s driveshaft I noticed 'dampness' where the driveshaft connected. The other side was 'dry'. I disconnected the shaft - I can't find any splits or tears in the boot - should I just repack with grease or is this a sign of CV problems? Any advice grate...
