Re: 1Y Head Replacement - more help please!!

Thanks Colin - I think you've answered my question but possibly confused me more (my shortfall, not yours) about locking everything down before I swap over the heads!!

Re: 1Y Head Replacement - more help please!!

Thanks dude. The engine has always sounded like it was idling just ever so slightly, and I mean just ever so slightly, fast. Would that degree of "outness" on the timing cause that?

1Y Head Replacement - more help please!!

1981 van, originally with a 1.6 naturally asthmatic. Now a 1.9 1Y diesel, from a 1998 Seat Ibiza, fitted just over two years ago by a local garage. Hi all. Okay, so I'm replacing the head on my 1Y after two injector seats cracked (due to a staggeringly stupid amount of ham-fistedness on my part) and...

Re: new owner with 16 diesel water cooled

Molly60 - put your location in your profile, someone close to you may be able to come and have a look and point you in the right direction.

And yes, if you take the head off, you should use new bolts when replacing it :ok

Part Number Help Please

Hi all - I need to replace the head on my 1Y, but need some guidance with slightly different part numbers Current head is off a '98 Seat Ibiza 1Y, part number 028 103 373. I have found a replacement which I think will fit, from a '99 Caddy 1Y, part number 028 103 374H. Can anyone advise if these par...

Re: Diesel running rough and hot

Thanks Ringo. I'm looking for a head as I type. I've found one which I think *may* fit, but it is a slightly different part number, mine is 028 103 373 and came off a '98 Seat Ibiza, and I've found one from a '99 Caddy, part number 028103374. I'll post in a new thread to see if anyone knows if they ...

Re: Blueish smoke and general loss of power (kinda)

Hi all - just back in from the Gulag, hell, if it could go wrong, it did on the shift I've just had...  Anyway, Mr Strong has posted pretty much all of what we found when we looked at his van earlier. There's no fuel odour in the oil, and there is no oily residue around the exhaust. Hold...

Re: Blueish smoke and general loss of power (kinda)

I had a quick look at the van this afternoon before i started work, and to me it looked more white than blue. I suspect timing, but i'll post more when i get home :)

Re: 1Y fitted but sounds 'loose' and clatters??

Do what Ringo says, but before you do, crack each injector in turn (with the engine running) until there's plenty of diesel coming out - you can be sure then that there is no air in the system :)

Re: Diesel running rough and hot

Thanks guys - camper, I really want to stick with diesel if I can. I like the economy, I've got a Triumph for speed, and it makes a reassuring chug behind me :) Billy - two of the injector seats are cracked, hence all the over-fuelling issues and running hot. I need to do a head swap at the very lea...

Re: Diesel running rough and hot

Thanks Kap - Tdi is an option, but I need the van back on the road as soon as really, and a replacement head is also a lot cheaper than a Tdi lump!!

Re: Diesel running rough and hot

At the 3 o'clock position in this photo on both injectors, you can just about make out the cracks - I really should have noticed earlier....

Re: Diesel running rough and hot

Well, I've finally got to the bottom of the problem. I decided to take out the new heat shields again and compare them to the old ones that I'd taken out. Indeed, there are some subtle differences, but not enough to cause injector blow-by. When I took out no.2 injector though, I noticed a dirty grea...
