Thanks for that. I've just called them. They will pick up the van for free but they want £1,100 for a recon engine, they do all the fitting etc. Mine's a B reg, (actually slightly newer engine) deisel, 1.6, turbo charged. The worn cambelt slipped and more than likely the pistons are buggered. The res...

New engine

Where can I get a new engine fitted. I have B reg Deisel turbo 1.6 at present. I am not able to do it myself. Any suggestions?

How much is it likely to cost?

Nah, I'm just going to sell it as it is. It's empty inside. No fittings. Rust here and there, dent in the drivers door. I'm sure that can be knocked back into shape. The engine is the problem. Is it just the timing or have the pistons been knocked around? Anyway, has anyone any idea what price I sho...

Thanks for the link to Elite VW etc. Fix it? Just like that! Take the head off? How? Fix the timing? How? I was told it's very awkward to get at the timing. I would need a hoist. It all sounds too much for me, I'm afraid. It's probably something minor. Shame to just let it lay there in my carpark. A...

Engine probably knackered, now what?

I posted a while ago how my timer belt slipped on the way back from a trip to Scotland and the AA brought the old van back to London. The engine was making an awful clattering noise when I switched it on. Some people suggested I might have screwed up the timing or a tooth might have slipped out or w...

Thanks, Camper, I'll get round to replacing the timer belt first and see how it sounds.

I'd like to hang onto this old van if I could. How much roughly would a replacement engine cost?

Excuse my ignorance, but is it really that simple to replace an engine? Any ideas where I might get a 1.9?

Non fly by wire???

Would I need a hoist to swap engines? can it be done without one? I have a good mechanic friend who might be able to do it for me. he said it is very difficult to reset the timings without dropping the engine down or being in a pit. Is that true?
